About
Tired of finding out about great events after the fact, Elise Rafferty of Bowerbird Cottage is the brainchild of ‘What’s on Gulgong’.
“It constantly blows me away the depth of musical and artistic talent we have in our small
community. Utilising the old ‘build it and they’ll come’ theory, I hope that providing a platform
for artists and venues of all kinds to promote their events, performances and galleries will
bring more tourist and community involvement in local events. It is my hope that
reinvigorating the community in this way has flow on effects for our local economy and
promotes local small businesses with a broader reach”

A little about Gulgong
Gulgong is a town steeped in history, offering visitors a glimpse into Australia’s gold rush era. Nestled in the Mudgee Region, this charming destination boasts heritage-listed buildings, winding streets, and a vibrant community that celebrates its rich past while embracing modern comforts.
Once a bustling gold mining town, Gulgong saw an influx of around 20,000 residents during the New South Wales gold rush. Today, visitors can explore the original mine shaft at Red Hill, where Tom Saunders first discovered gold in 1870. The Gulgong Gold Experience offers an interactive journey through this fascinating period, complete with historical exhibits and a towering wooden Poppet Head.
The town’s architecture remains largely unchanged since the late 1800s, with intricate iron-lace balconies and original verandahs adorning its historic buildings. Among these is the Prince of Wales Opera House, Australia’s oldest performing arts venue, where Dame Nellie Melba once graced the stage.
For those eager to dive deeper into Gulgong’s heritage, the Holtermann Museum showcases an extraordinary collection of photographs from the height of the gold rush in 1872. Meanwhile, the Gulgong Pioneers Museum houses an impressive array of Australian artifacts, offering a tangible connection to the past.
Beyond its historical allure, Gulgong is home to a thriving arts and shopping scene. Visitors can browse unique fashion boutiques, explore local art galleries, and enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of the town’s eclectic stores. Whether strolling through its picturesque streets or engaging with friendly locals, Gulgong promises an unforgettable experience.
